The ambition is to create a healthy town centre with a high quality mix of leisure, retail, workspace, community services and housing to meet the requirements of the current community while also attracting new visitors, businesses and residents in the future.
The eight-point plan
A five screen cinema and a separate multi-purpose leisure building.
A new landmark hotel building on the corner of Abbey Street and the Roanne Ringway. The hotel, which will be operated by an international hotel brand, offering 145 guest rooms and a variety of public areas all facing Abbey Street.
3. Food hall
An exciting and flexible space for a variety of carefully selected retailers, with places to eat, drink and shop. Looking on to the new public square, there will be an opportunity for alfresco dining and drinking.
4. Public square
A beautiful new public square for people to enjoy will be at the heart of the development with restaurants, shops and cafes surrounding the square on all sides. The square will provide a flexible space to host events, as well as offering outdoor dining spaces and new areas of landscape planting.
The proposals for new residential accommodation are at their early stages. The focus is on creating a new and exciting residential offer that compliments the Abbey Street transformation and supports the vitality of the town centre.
450 parking spaces will be provided across a multi-storey car park and along the western boundary with the Roanne Ringway. 37 spaces will be dedicated to guests of the hotel.
Access will be via the existing arrangement on Abbey Street. There is also the option to enter via the Roanne Ringway and exit via Queen’s Road. Good quality cycle parking and electric vehicle charging points will also be provided.

8. Community services
We are exploring bringing new community services to the heart of the town centre, such as educational and health care facilities.
